If your printer is producing streaky output, faded text, or missing colors, clogged printer heads are often to blame. Most inkjet printers have a built-in cleaning utility you can run directly from your computer or the printer's control panel.
Signs of Clogged Print Heads
- Horizontal white lines or streaks running across printed pages
- One or more colors missing from prints
- Faded or washed-out colors even with adequate ink levels
- Blurry text or blotchy images
Running the Software Cleaning Utility
This is the recommended first step and safe for all inkjet printers.
- 1Open Printer Properties. On Windows, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select your printer, then click Printer properties.
- 2Find the Maintenance Tab. Look for a tab labeled "Maintenance," "Services," or "Tools." This varies by manufacturer but all major brands include it.
- 3Run Head Cleaning. Click Clean Print Heads or Printhead Cleaning. The printer will run a cleaning cycle lasting 1-3 minutes.
- 4Print a Test Page. After cleaning completes, print a nozzle check pattern or test page to see if print quality has improved.
- 5Repeat if Needed. You can run up to 3 cleaning cycles. If quality doesn't improve after 3 cycles, move on to manual cleaning.
Note: Each cleaning cycle uses a small amount of ink. Avoid running excessive cycles back-to-back as this can drain cartridges quickly.
Manual Print Head Cleaning
For stubborn clogs, a gentle manual cleaning can help. You will need distilled water and lint-free cloths or cotton swabs.
- 1Remove the Ink Cartridges. Open the cartridge access door and remove all cartridges. Place them on a paper towel.
- 2Dampen a Cloth. Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth or cotton swab with distilled water (not tap water).
- 3Gently Wipe the Nozzle Plate. Carefully wipe the bottom of the print head where the nozzles are. Do not scrub — use light dabbing motions.
- 4Allow to Dry. Wait 5-10 minutes for the area to fully dry before reinstalling the cartridges.
- 5Reinstall and Test. Insert the cartridges, run the software cleaning utility once more, and print a test page.
After Cleaning
If print quality is still poor after both software and manual cleaning, the print head may be permanently clogged or damaged. In this case, replacing the ink cartridges with new ones (especially if current ones are old or dried out) is the most cost-effective next step.
